How it works

A clipboard that knows the date.

Lend Shelf replaces the sign-out sheet by the spare laptops. Here is everything it does, and everything it does not.

1. Open a shelf

Give it a name and the longest loan (1 to 60 days). You get two links. The manager link is the only key to the shelf: anyone who has it can change or delete the shelf, and it cannot be recovered if lost, because only a scrambled copy of it is stored. The counter link is for borrowers: it can sign laptops out and in, nothing else.

2. Add the laptops

Each laptop gets a slot number (01, 02...), a name people can see on it, an optional model and asset tag, and the kit that goes with it: charger, case, mouse, adapter, headset, stylus. Print labels for the lids; with the Shelf Pass they carry a QR code to that laptop's counter page.

3. At the counter

To borrow: a first name, the number of days and the kit going out, plus a note about any damage already there. To return: tick the kit coming back, say whether it works (and what is wrong if not), and tick the hand-back steps. If everything is back, working and reset, the laptop is on the shelf again. If not, it goes On hold with the reasons written down, and only the manager link can clear it.

4. The board

Due dates are calendar days in US Eastern time. The board shows each laptop as On the shelf, Out, Due today, Overdue (with days late), On hold or Retired, in words as well as colours. The history lists every loan with times, kit out and back, and notes.

What it does not do

  • It does not track, locate, lock or erase laptops. It only knows what people type.
  • It sends no email and no texts. Nothing you type leaves the site.
  • Shelf and counter pages carry no ad. The public pages carry one banner from AdEngine, WeldonPC's own small ad network (see Privacy).
  • It does not check who people are. Anyone with the counter link can sign a laptop out or in, the same as a clipboard on the wall.
  • It is not an inventory of what the laptops are worth, and not a repair or upkeep log.
