Sign-out board for shared laptops

Every shared laptop, out and back.

Lend Shelf keeps the clipboard for the laptops your office, club or household lends: who has which one, when it is due, whether the charger came back, and a hand-back checklist so the next person never lands in someone else's email.

Open a shelf, free The hand-back checklist

No account and no email address. Free for 3 laptops; the Shelf Pass is $1.95/month. Free during preview.

How a shelf is set up

Two links, one shelf.

Manager link

For the person who looks after the laptops

  • Add each laptop with a name, model, asset tag and the kit that goes with it.
  • See at a glance who has what, what is due today and what is overdue.
  • Check laptops on hold, clear them, retire old ones.
  • History, CSV export, QR labels and a paper sheet for when the internet is down.

Keep this one private: it is the only key to the shelf.

Counter link

For everyone who borrows

  • Pick a laptop, type a first name, choose how many days.
  • Tick the charger and anything else that goes with it.
  • Bring it back on the same page: kit, does it work, hand-back steps.
  • Or scan the QR label on the lid and land on that laptop's page.

Share it, pin it, print it. It cannot change the shelf's settings.

What gets recorded

Out. Due. Back.

  1. Out

The name, the number of days, the kit going out and any scratch already there, stamped with the time. The laptop leaves the shelf on the board.

  2. Due

The board counts down: Out, then Due today, then Overdue with the days late. No emails and no texts: the board simply says so.

  3. Back

Kit ticked back, works or not, the hand-back steps done. All good and it is on the shelf again; anything missing puts it On hold with the reason written down.

Kit

The charger is half the laptop.

Choose what travels with each laptop. At the counter every item is ticked out and ticked back, so the missing charger turns up the same day, not three borrowers later.

  • Charger
  • Case or sleeve
  • Mouse
  • Adapter or dongle
  • Headset
  • Stylus or pen

The hand-back

Hand it back clean.

A borrowed laptop remembers whoever used it last. Six steps at the counter, written by Lend Shelf, keep the next person out of your accounts. Skip one and the laptop waits On hold until someone checks it.

Questions people ask

Who is it for?

Anyone who lends a few laptops to adults: a front office with spares, a nonprofit or library corner, a club, a coworking room, a training room, a household with one laptop the kids' grandparents borrow. It is made for adults lending to adults; please do not use it to record children.

Does it track or lock the laptops?

No. Lend Shelf records what people type at the counter, nothing more. It cannot see where a laptop is, lock it, or erase it. For a lost laptop, use the maker's own locate service.

Does it send reminders?

No email and no texts, to anyone. The board shows Due today and Overdue with the days late; the person who looks after the shelf decides how to follow up.

Who can see the borrowers' names?

Anyone with the counter link sees who has each laptop, unless the shelf is set to hide names at the counter; the manager board always shows them. Use first names and an initial. Names refuse email addresses and phone numbers.

What if the internet is down?

Print the paper sign-out sheet from the manager board and keep it by the shelf. It asks for the same things as the counter page: who, when, the kit, anything already wrong, and the hand-back steps.

How long is anything kept?

Loans are kept for two years, then deleted. A shelf nobody opens for 400 days is deleted with everything in it. You can delete a shelf yourself at any time.
